There is only one answer: Reforge!

Staff, Dagger and Mace. In case you missed it: none of them are swords.

In Naxxramas I fought a political war to gain the right to bid DKP for the Shadow Priest best-in-slot weapon. In Ulduar, I lugged around a Guiding Star, a mace which other Shadow Priests at the time were forbidden to roll on. For Trial of the Crusader I had the opportunity to get my hands on a dagger for a change and not just any dagger, my first weapon in Wrath of the Lich King intended for damage dealers.

What do the Torch of Holy Fire and Guiding Star have in common? Mp5. Mp5 has no damage-increasing value to a Shadow Priest. We have scads of mana regenerating abilities, passive and active, at our disposal. Trust me, we don’t need Mp5.

When I passed on the Battered Hilt it wasn’t really a difficult decision. I can’t use Quel’Delar, Lens of the Mind. It’s a Sword. And Priests can’t equip Swords. And the Mace equivalent (at the time) had no Haste. It had Mp5. Making it significantly inferior to other weapons at that item level. Blizzard eventually changed the mace:

we have made a change that removes the mp5 from the main hand mace and changed that to haste to match the sword to make it more dps-worthy

I don’t understand it. Healers and casters alike love Haste. We all love Critical Strike rating. We all Most of us love Spirit (to differing degrees, yes). The only stat that you can put on a caster weapon that will turn the healers away is Hit Rating. The only stat you can put on a caster weapon that will turn us damage dealers away is Mp5.

So why put either? There’s nothing to stop Blizzard from filling our Tier items with the necessary Hit or Mp5. I’d much prefer to have to juggle having enough Hit on the rest of my gear – Tier, Bind on Pickup or crafted gear – than getting a chunk of it on my weapon. I heal with the same item, so I’d happily ditch the +hit component on Blade of the Tarasque. A healer stuck with an Mp5 weapon will be using that same weapon to DPS too I’ll bet.

The only reason I can think of for putting Mp5 or Hit on a weapon is to reduce demand for that item. Tanks and physical DPS don’t roll on the same weapons. And it would suck if half your raid considered the +1000 Spellpower/+100 Haste/+100 Crit weapon to be their Best-in-slot. Assume a raid made up of 4 tanks, 6 healers, 8 physical DPS and 7 caster DPS:

• If an item is clearly for tanks only you’re looking at about 25% chance of winning
• If an item is clearly for healers you’re looking at about 17% of winning
• If an item is for physical DPS you’ve only got about 13% chance of winning
• If an item is for caster DPS you’ve got about 14% chance of winning

That seems pretty fair to me. But if there was nothing to differentiate the healers and caster DPS items then those 11 players have only a 9% chance of winning an item. Or think of it like this, you might need to see the weapon you want drop 10 times before you win it. A tank needs only see it drop (at the most) 4 times before they have it.

In Monday night’s raid an argument started up when the Blood Prince Council dropped a sweet offhand: Shadow Silk Spindle. All the caster DPS, myself included, and most of the healers jumped in to bid. I left the bidding at about 4000 DKP (what I’d paid for my current, +hit offhand from ToC) and I think it sold to a Resto Druid for almost double that amount.

Party 3 wasn’t happy (that would be the party the caster DPS are slotted into by raid leaders everywhere). One of our Mages argued that it was a DPS item because another offhand existed elsewhere “for healers”. And that a healer bidding on the Shadow Silk Spindle was just revealing that they hadn’t done their homework or planned their gear upgrades.

Apparently because there is no Spirit on the Shadow Silk Spindle it isn’t intended for healers. (By the way, is anyone else having flashbacks to the Mage-post-3.1 mentality “its got Spirit on it, so it’s for Mages, duh”? Oh the irony) I was perplexed. I don’t think I’ve ever made a gear upgrade decision based on the presence of Spirit on an item for Shadow or for Discipline. I said as much in Party chat and pointed out that I thought that the offhand was ideal for Discipline, so who was I to say that it wasn’t also ideal for other healing classes?

If this is the amount of debate caused by an ambiguous offhand item, would I be witness to the same debate if a dagger with the same distribution of Spellpower, Intellect, Haste and Crit dropped? You’re right. It would probably be even worse.

So they may still be some ambiguity about Spirit and whether it is or isn’t a healer stat. But there’s no ambiguity about Mp5. Mp5 only benefits healers. There is no talent, armor or glyph that says “Your mana regained per 5 seconds is converted into spellpower”. There is with Spirit, but not Mp5.

So guess what the new Shadow Priest best-in-slot weapon is from Icecrown Citadel?

63 Haste rating, that’s what we’re short changed. Haste Rating is currently valued to be as important as Spell power for Shadow Priests (that is, until you reach about 800 Haste). So to make the Mace as good as the Sword for Shadow Priests they would either have to:

• add 63 Haste or
• add about 90 Critical Strike Rating or
• boost the total spell power up to 855.

Not likely. So instead we’re also going to be forced to endure a ton of healer hate (well if the Torch of Holy Fire incident taught me anything). Competition for the sword will be limited to Mages, Warlocks and Holy Paladins. Competition for the mace will include Restoration and Elemental Shaman, Shadow Priests, Moonkin, Restoration Druids, Holy and Discipline Priests.

I wonder if this is some new type of Hybrid Tax. 5-10% less DPS and crappy weapons you need to squabble with your healers over.

The best gear for Restoration Druids from Icecrown Citadel (25)

This gear guide is a follow up from my Patch 3.3 Gear Guide for the Casual/10 Man Raider. The guide is focused on raiders who have access to 25 man content through their guild. I’ve included 5-6 options for each slot to ensure that there is both heroic and non heroic items available for those raiders who don’t progress through 25 man heroic content.

The second wing of Icecrown Citadel – to be released this week – includes some really juicy drops for Restoration Druids like:

• Helm of the Elder Moon
• Professor’s Bloodied Smock
• Leather of Stitched Scourge Parts

Notes

• All options included here are leather armor and from normal and heroic difficulty modes. I also include heroic 10 man gear as I’m expecting most 25 man raiders will participate in 10 man raids as well.
• You can download an excel spreadsheet with the top 20ish pieces per slot based on this list if you prefer. I like to keep a printed copy on my desk so I can quickly and easily decide if I should spend my hard earned DKP on an item when it drops.
• This spreadsheet is purely based on the best stats for Restoration Druids so you will see the occasional +Hit or Balance item in the list.
• For some slots the Balance tier gear actually ranks better than the Restoration pieces in some cases. I’ve not included these because I’m assuming trees will be aiming for the Restoration tier bonus.

Restoration Tier 10 – Lasherweave Garb

I just wanted to reiterate how to get your Tier 10 gear for those who are still unsure. Even if you have access to 25 man raids and Tier tokens you still need to purchase the base ilevel 251 Lasherweave set before you can upgrade it to a 264 set.

If you wish to own all 5 pieces of Tier 10 you need:

• 405 x Emblem of Frost for the base ilevel 251 set
• 5 x Sanctification Token to upgrade to the ilevel 264 version
• 5 x Heroic Sanct. Token for ilevel 277 heroic pieces

10 players face off against the first boss in Icecrown Citadel: Lord Marrowgar

Patch 3.3 has brought the final raid instance for the current WoW expansion, Icecrown Citadel. With the release of 3.3 Restoration Druids have also experienced a significant change to how we benefit from Haste and our Haste cap has changed. This means re-evaluating what gear is available to help us perform our best through Icecrown Citadel.

While Icecrown Citadel has been gated, most gear and boss details have already been data mined which is great because we can start planning and making decisions about what gear upgrades are most achievable even before the bosses are available. Something to keep in mind is that the gear you gather at this final step of raiding will probably also form your leveling set when Cataclysm is released.

As with the patch 3.2 gear guide, I’m also splitting this into two parts: this one focusing on 10 man/casual raiders and a follow up will contain a 25 Man raider list (I’ll post that one in the near future). I define the 10 man/casual raider as:

1. The fairly serious 10 man raider who sometimes PUGs the easy 25s
2. The 25 man raider who is trying to gear up a Resto alt or dual spec set
3. The casual player who knows their stuff, runs heroics with friends and PUGs easy 25 mans
4. The player who has just come back from a break and wants to get back into 25 man raiding

Notes:

• All options included here are leather armor and from normal (non-heroic) difficulty modes.

• I define PUGable 25 Mans as: Naxxramas, Obsidium Sanctum: 0 Drakes, Eye Of Eternity, Onyxia and Trial of the Crusader
• If you are uncomfortable with the though of PUGing but you have plenty of gold, consider looking for a GDKP run on your server so that you don’t have to worry about performance as much.
• With the new dungeon finder, being a casual player and having access to fantastic gear has never been easier. Make sure you try to run the random heroic daily for your Emblem of Frost and always make an effort to get into a group for the weekly raid quest, these are generally easy bosses and a reward you with 5 Emblems of Frost.

3.3 Restoration Druid Haste Cap

Druids now need 856 haste to hit haste cap without taking talent points in Celestial Focus, or still a high 735 haste with a CF build. When researching and determining your gear upgrades you need to take that into consideration.

Restoration Tier 10 – Lasherweave Garb

When you are spending your Emblem of Frost and you can choose between a Lasherweave Tier 10 ilvl251 piece and a stand alone item I would strongly recommend taking the Tier item if you intend to spend any time in ICC 25 before the expansion ends. Once you have purchased your base level 251 Tier gear, you only need to win a token from a 25 man raid boss in order to upgrade this item to a much better piece (ilvl 264).

The Argent Tournament Grounds

OK, this post has been much harder to collate than I expected.  Blizzard have made this especially difficult considering they have the same items with different names for Horde & Alliance. They have also named items that drop from both normal and heroic versions of the Trial of the Crusader raid the same… but given them different stats arghhh!  To top this off items that have been data mined by MMO Champion, are not showing in Wowhead yet so its hard to get a full view of which items are best.

Instead of waiting for everything to be added properly, I’m still releasing this now, however will most likely edit the post with an update in a few weeks after all the bosses are unlocked to ensure the information is still accurate. For any Horde looking that this post, all the items I’ve listed are the Alliance versions – do not fear! You also have the same items available to you, the names are just slightly different.

Notes:

• I’ve tried wherever possible to only include leather items. Some slots for example wrists & feet had an abysmal selection of decent items to choose from so I’ve added some cloth options also.  For a completely expanded list, check out my Loot Rank Template with weightings included!
• I’ve included the Item Levels for each piece to try to help simplify everything considering many items have the same name.
• For some slots the Balance tier gear actually ranks better than the Restoration pieces. I’ve not included these because I’m assuming trees will be aiming for the 4 piece bonus.
• I’ve tried to only add 4 items per slot, however to ensure that the raiders out there who do 25s but don’t do Hard Modes still have an option, some slots will have 5 or 6 to choose from.
• Items that aren’t yet showing in WowHead but have been data mined are linking to the MMO Champion Database.  Unfortunately you actually have to click on these links to view the item statistics.

Mmmmm.... Yummy Tasty Triumph Items

With the changes to mana regen (again) and the boost to MP5, I’ve been scouring through Elitist Jerks posts and articles to try and find some consensus on Resto Druid gear weightings for Patch 3.2.  It took me ages, and I ended up going into Northrend Beasts last week with absolutely no idea if there was an potential drop I should be looking out for.

Now that I’ve finished my reading & research I want to make it easier for other trees out there,and have created a gear wish list so you know what to look out for.  I’m splitting this into 2 parts, this first part aimed at players who fit into the below 4 descriptions:

1. The fairly serious 10 Man raider who sometimes PUGs the easy 25 Mans
2. The 25 Man Raider who is trying to gear up a Resto alt or dual spec set
3. The casual player who knows there stuff, runs heroics with friends & PUG easy 25 mans

• While waiting for a good store of Triumph emblems, you can build yourself a great set between Emblems of Conquest/Valour pieces & splashing out some cash on crafted items.
